THE Northgate development project, which consists of a complex housing a shopping mall and duty free centre at the border towns of Pengkalan Hulu and Betong in Thailand, is expected to operate in the first quarter of next year.
State executive councillor Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Kadir (BN-Kamunting) said the infrastructure for the first phase of the project would be completed by the year-end.
He said the developer had decided in 2011 to revise the project, by including plans of constructing the complex and other amenities.
“The developer had promised that the project would be operational by the first quarter of next year.
“The complex to be known as The Carnival will create about 1,000 job opportunities once completed,” he said in a reply to a written question by Aznel Ibrahim (BN- Pengkalan Hulu).
Aznel had asked about the progress of the project, and the number of jobs it would create for the locals there.
It is learnt that phase two of the project is expected to consist of commercial buildings including offices, a hotel, a convention centre and a square.
